To the new tenants at Titiaanstraat 18
Welcome in our fine and quiet neighbourhood. We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we are doing it now for over thirty years. You’ll find however that the building, because of its pre-war origine, is rather receptive for noise. Floors and ceilings are thin and we would like to ask you to take care of proper carpeting, the use of slippers and refrain from the use of loud sound systems such as home-theatres and surround sound. This will add tremendous to comfortable living. Perhaps you would like to take in account that we sleep directly above the little room on the street side and would kindy suggest to accomodate very young kids or babies in another room. If you’d like to get acquainted with us please do not hesitate to contact us. We’d love to help you out with some local knowledge. Meanwhile, have a great Christmas and for sure we’ll meet onm New Year’s eve after midnight firing crackers and more… “-)
Kind regards,
Margaret Wijnands & Jonne van der Drift

It seems rather odd to communicate with one’s neigbours in this way, but I can’t find your email address. You should have ours though…
Today is a great day for all the kids in Holland. Sinterklaas (common language for Sint Nicolaas) arrives with his obedient servant Zwarte Piet. I’m sure you’ll find more on him on Wikipedia or elsewhere on the net. I have posted some photos of his arrival this morning at 08:30 AM when I was woken up by the kids singing on the street corner while waiting. Some pics I commented. Also included an aerial shot of your patio after the clean-up. http://www.flickr.com/photos/89481167@N00/

I think you will love Amsterdam. Please add me to your list, I am eager to hear what comes as a surprise and what seems completely natural, even half a world away. SJ

Brownie, too? (No, not the brownies you made – Brownie the cat!) That’s some trip for a cat, especially one that must be getting up there in age. Any language problems for Brownie so far?
Please add me to your update list so I can keep up with your adventures. (Despite my comment above, however, I’m really not a big fan of cat-blogging!)

I have really enjoyed reading your entries. Certainly a lot of highlights. The reading of your blog has put a smile on my face. Thank you for taking the time share the fun and interesting parts of life. I think the connection betweeen skiing and the rifle shooting is that people may use the skis to hunt quietly in the woods.
I look forward to what you will share.
Thank you.

Wonderful blog! I really enjoyed reading about your experiences and your writing is excellent! Can I interest you in making written contributions to our ING Expat website (in development) and our magazine, Xpat? I’m so impressed! Please say yes…

Being a fellow American living in Holland myself, I enjoy reading about your adventures. As a matter of fact, I just finished reading Like a Kid in a Grocery Store and laughed outloud. This was myself just a few days ago.
I’ve been here for quite some time now and have gone to school, trying to immerse myself as much as possible in the culture, but many times it helps to have a bit of reassurance that I’m not the only one.
Please add me to your update list as well.

By the way, I’m a Chicago girl now living in Frankfurt, Germany. We’re almost (relatively) neighbors!

Ruth I’m trying to get in contact with you but the e-mails John gave me don’t seem to work. My e-mail is batejm@aol.com. I would appreciate it if you would get back to me.

Hi Kelley heroes….
How’s life over there in the US? To us here in Europe all looks quite miserable, although BO seems to light the fire of hope for you and the rest of us in the world… we wish you a very merry and blessed Christmas. We’re also looking forward to many more youth concerts at the Concertgebouw. Lucky you weren’t here on Christmas eve since we were visited by Felix and the other fine young cannibals. Bi for now….
